If you’re already receiving Social Security checks, you are automatically registered in traditional Medicare. You’ll get your Medicare card three months before your 65th birthday and the benefits take effect on the first day of the month of your 65th birthday. However, if you’re not getting Social Security payments yet, you have to enroll in Medicare. The Social Security Administration (SSA) handles your enrollment process for Medicare.
